Field Day Fun & Thanks
Many thanks to all the parent volunteers who helped blow up balloons, set up the field, keep score, and chaperone the kids out on the field. And another hearty thanks to the Dallin 5th graders who did a wonderful job leading all the activities in a responsible and fun way. We can't help thanking the weather gods, too, for the best field day weather in recent memory. Mary Jacey & Phyllis Wentworth
The results were tallied and in the end there was a tie between Green and Yellow for 1st place, Blue came in 2nd place, and Red in third place. Congratulations to all the participants!
And a big thank you to Mary and Phyllis for running this favorite Dallin event!

Become a Teosinte Curriculum Volunteer!
The Arlington-Teosinte Sister City Project (ATSCP) is a volunteer-based organization that since 1988 has promoted friendship between Arlington and the village of Teosinte, El Salvador, through dialogue, cultural exchange, and support for each community’s priorities.
Arlington’s seven elementary schools bring real-world content to fourth graders’ Social Studies and English Language Arts requirements through a curriculum about life in Teosinte. The curriculum includes an “Imaginary Trip to Teosinte” presentation, a lesson on “knowing your audience/cultural awareness, and a letter exchange between fourth graders and kids in Teosinte. Arlington High School Spanish students participate by translating the letters.
We are seeking parents who are interested in volunteering to support and enhance the curriculum at their child’s elementary school next year. The time commitment is flexible.
Please contact Beth Soltzberg at bethss@comcast.net or 781-648-1445 if you are interested.

The campaign to address the school’s projected deficit of $3.9 million is coming to a close in just over a week – June 7, 2010. The FY11 School Gap Fund is a one year emergency fundraiser which aims to bridge the financial gap while Arlington finds long term solutions to the schools' financial stresses. The Fund will support a priority list proposed by the principals and school administrators, which the School Committee voted to authorize on April 27th. The campaign has to close by June 7th in order to know which teachers and staff can be rehired for next year. In the last week, the Bridge the Gap Fund has doubled the amount of money donated. Nearly, $250k has been donated by nearly 700 people.

Update from our School Nurse Mrs. (Spehar) Donofrio
Hi Parents,
With the warm weather quickly approaching our wonderful children love to run and play outside with new excitement. Just a few little tips to keep our little ones safe:
1. Sneakers are the safest shoe for outdoor play. If your child would like to wear sandals, please pack them with a pair of tennis shoes for outdoors and physical educationJ
When you wear flip-flops, your toes and feet are exposed, making them susceptible to falling objects or people stepping on your toes. Doctors are seeing more nail injuries and broken or bruised toes, which wouldn't happen if you covered the front of your feet.
Flip-flops don't offer much in the way of support: no arch support, no heel cushioning, and no shock absorption. That can cause foot pain, tendonitis, and even sprained ankles if you trip.
So, enjoy your flip-flops, but just not all the time and without giving them any thought!
2. Sunscreen protects your child from the harmful rays of the sun. If you would like sunscreen on your child please label sunscreen with your child’s name and send it to school.
3. Drinking from the classroom water fountain a few times a day is a great way for a child to stay hydrated. A water bottle can be sent from home to keep your child hydrated in the classroom.
Active children do not adjust to hot temperatures (greater than 95°F) as well as adults. Their body surface, as a proportion of their overall weight, is much greater than an adult's. So they produce more heat during physical activity and they sweat less than adults. This reduces their ability to get rid of body heat and could lead to dehydration.
Enjoy the Beautiful Weather,
Christina Donofrio RN School nurse
